The sound.. the albums.. the daily wind down

In the 80’s- the music was unreal.
Listening on the radio was awful. In order to hear the real music – you had to have a stereo system.
Lucky for us (3 nurses-3 bedroom apartment) our roommate had the “El Dorado” of stereos. The Harman Kardon system.
We all contributed something for the living room and I opened my 1st credit card and got a huge color tv.
My other roommate got the coaches.
We all had albums from our Nursing School dorm days and were continually buying new ones.
Every Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Robert Palmer, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, Bob Segar and many others.
It seemed that we started each afternoon – sometimes still in uniform when we got through the door.
It was a daily decompression session.
Could last for hours if it wasn’t going to be a “going out” night.
Friends could drop by and they were usually nurses, too.
Our landlord never complained. He was on the 1st floor and we were on the 3rd with an empty unit between us.
Of course there were ashtrays everywhere and we all smoked… and not just cigarettes.
Had to unwind.
The music was so much a part of our lives then.
When these artists’ songs come on these days- I am usually driving and listening to i Heart Radio. The car stereos are amazing.. but not anywhere near as good as The Harman Kardon system.
The songs always bring me back to that time. I immediately relax and feel so much better.
Some things do not change.. or as the Little River Band Song goes.. “Reminiscing”.
If you have never heard that song…you should. It is a 1978 classic that sums up the feelings of that period. It defies classification. It is just zen.
